One under-$10 technology player that's quickly moving within range of triggering a major breakout trade is ParkerVision (PRKR), which designs, develops and markets its proprietary radio frequency technologies and products for use in semiconductor circuits for wireless communication products. This stock has been red hot so far in 2013, with shares up sharply by 105%.

If you take a look at the chart for ParkerVision, you'll notice that this stock has been uptrending strong for the last month, with shares soaring higher from its low of $2.38 to its recent high of $4.29 a share. During that uptrend, shares of PRKR have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed share of PRKR back above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages. Shares of PRKR have now moved within range of triggering a major breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in PRKR if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $4.29 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average volume of 2.51 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then PRKR will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone from late October that started at $7.50 a share. Some possible upside targets if PRKR gets into that gap down zone with volume are $5 to $6 a share.

Traders can look to buy PRKR off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 200-day moving average of $3.90 a share, or near its 50-day moving average of $3.56 a share. One can also buy PRKR off strength once it takes out $4.29 a share with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Public companies leveraging their patent portfolios, (aka "patent plays"), are getting the market's attention. Companies such as Vringo (VRNG), ParkerVision (PRKR), MGT Capital (MGT), Worlds Inc. (WDDD.OB) and others have presented trading opportunities due to their volatility while retaining the chance for a big payoff to those investors who stay the course. Yet there exist viable patent plays that are still undiscovered. Some of these so called "plays," which are not getting enough attention, are actually real companies making and selling real products or services in contrast to pure patent monetization companies. Some known examples are Single Touch Interactive (SITO.OB) and Blue Calypso (BCYP.OB). This article is focused on another one of these patent plays, On Track Innovations Ltd. (OTIV).

The MCS two-unit protocol or double red cell collection device helps blood collectors optimize the collection of red cells by automating the blood separation function, eliminating the need for laboratory processing, and enabling the collection of two units of red cells from a single donor thus maximizing the amount of red cells collected per eligible donor and helping to mitigate red cell shortages in countries where this problem exists. Blood collectors can also use the MCS system to collect one unit of red cells and a jumbo (double) unit of plasma, or one unit of red cells and one unit of platelets from a single donor. The MCS plasma protocol providing the possibility to collect 600-800ml of plasma for transfusion to patients or for pharmaceutical industry use completes the comprehensive portfolio of different blood component collection options on this device.

    Calling all cash flows
When you are trying to buy the market's best stocks, it's worth checking up on your companies' free cash flow once a quarter or so, to see whether it bears any relationship to the net income in the headlines. That's what we do with this series. Today, we're checking in on Haemonetics (NYSE: HAE  ) , whose recent revenue and earnings are plotted below.

  • [By Lisa Levin]

Haemonetics (NYSE: HAE) shares fell 8.57% to reach a new 52-week low of $30.40 after the company Q4 adjusted earnings of $0.46 per share on revenue of $241.10 million. The company's board also announced a $100 million share buyback program.

  • [By Holly LaFon]

Haemonetics (HAE) is the market leader in blood management products for collection centers and hospitals. The company's equipment and related consumables allow collection centers to separate blood into the components of plasma, red cells and white cells. Hospital-based products include blood diagnostics, devices to salvage patient blood during surgery and software to manage blood supply. Earnings temporarily declined due to two product quality issues that management of Haemonetics has stated have been remedied. In our opinion, earnings growth may be expected to accelerate in the next few years as Haemonetics rolls out its automated whole blood collection solution to collection centers. Relative to the existing manual process, the company's automated solution speeds up the collection process and reduces discard rates. Cost and efficiency gains become more important to collection centers as hospitals better manage their blood supply. We believe the company is a compelling value at 12x our $3.50 estimate of earnings power.
