Bull of the Day: Pilgrim's Pride (PPC) - Bull of the Day

Hot Small Cap Companies To Buy Right Now

Pilgrim's Pride (PPC) has seen some big action on recent Friday's, carries a great valuation and will be reporting earnings soon. It is a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy). It is the Bull of the Day.I Feel Like Chicken TonightIf the title line of this section is lost on you then I am showing my age a bit. That was a popular tag line from a commercial in the 80's but it's clear that the sentiment still rings true. With a 19% share of the domestic market, Pilgrim's Pride has a firm grip on second place behind Tyson's 22%. The 36 million bird weekly capacity also tells you that plenty of people are eating chicken.Company DescriptionPilgrim's Pride produces, processes and markets fresh, frozen, and value-added chicken products in the United States, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. The company was founded in 1945 and is headquartered in Greeley, Colorado. As of December 28, 2009, Pilgrim's Pride Corporation operates as a subsidiary of JBS USA Holdings, Inc. Earnings HistoryLooking to the earnings history, I see a stock that has beaten the number in two of the three most recent reports. The most recent quarter was a miss of $0.02, which translated into a negative earnings surprise of 8.7%. The two previous quarters had the analyst guessing where the number was going to come in and they were pretty light. The September 2012 quarter was s beat of $0.11 or 183%, and that was followed up by an even more impressive $0.17 beat for the December 2012 quarter. That translated to a beat of 212%, which isn't exactly chicken feed. Not a Small ChickenPPC has approximately 37,500 employees and 30 hatcheries. They also have 3,900 growers and 26 feed mills with production facilities throughout the Southeast of the United States, Mexico and Puerto Rico. The company sells to a wide range of food service companies like US Foodservice, Yum Brands, Wendy's, Burger King ! and ConAgra Foods. on the retail side, PCC sells to grocers like Walmart, Publix, Kroger and SuperValu among others.Earnings Estimates Tick HigherEstimates for FY2013 have been moving higher and higher. The 2013 calendar year started out with the Zacks Consensus sitting at $0.86, but that number jumped to $1.31 in April, and then again to $1.49 in May and now sits at $1.65. That is some excellent growth of nearly 100% in just six months. The picture for 2014 is a little less clear, but still shows some growth. The Zacks Consensus for next year started the year at $1.18 and ticked higher to $1.22 in April. A big move up to $1.41 the following month and a subsequent move to $1.47 at the current level. ValuationThe valuation picture for PPC is a good one. With a trailing PE of 20.8x the stock trades at a very small premium to the industry average of 19.5x. Not that great, but not that bad either. The impressive valuation metric is the forward PE of 9.3x compared to the 18x industry average. That is a significant discount for such a large player in the industry. The price to book of 4.1x carries a small premium to the 3.6x metric for the industry. Price to sales of 0.5x is only a fraction of the 2.4x industry average, so lots of room to expand there. The Chart The year to date price chart of PPC stock shows a few recent big up days. Both were more than 10% moves and both came on Friday's in June. Last Friday, 7/5 saw a surge of buying at the close, but nothing like the recent big moves. Is it at all a coincidence that PPC is the Bull of the Day on this second Friday in July? Well, I am not a believer in Easter Bunny or coincidences, just merely the appearance of said bunny and coincidences. How else to do explain all those egg hunts, chocolates and foam bunny treats? As for the stock, I like it here and beyond the August 1, 2013 earnings release. Brian Bolan is ! a Stock S! trategist for Zacks.com. Denbury Resources (DNR) fell 2.5% to $7.95, while Diamond Offshore Drilling (DO) fell 2.2% to $37.24. Schlumberger (SLB), Nabors Industries (NBR) and Newfield Exploration (NFX) each fell 1%.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Newfield Exploration (NFX) has plunged today after the oil and gas explorer revealed its production targets for 2014 and beyond.

    Associated Press

RTT News has the details on Newfield’s forecast:

Newfield Exploration Co. updated its “three-year plan” and provided additional information. Net production from continuing operations in 2014 is expected to range from 44 – 48 million BOE, or 10% – 20% higher than 2013 estimated net production from continuing operations of approximately 40 million BOE. Domestic liquids! producti! on in 2014 is expected to increase 30% over the previous year.

Jefferies’ Subash Chandra and Daniel Braziller offer their take on the announcement:

Company is tightening the previously announced production guidance range. New range is 44-48 mmboe and 48-55 mmboe in 2014 and 2015, respectively. Domestic liquids growth y/y in 2014 is expected at 30%, slightly below prior guidance for 38%. Lower liquids is likely the result of morecapital being deployed in the Cana and slower near-term growth in the Uinta due to refinery maintenance…

2013 production has so far come-in at the high-end of previous guidance, and a similar outcome is possible for 2014-2016. The stock is well positioned from here to outperform, as the market is likely assuming the midpoint of guidance will be achieved. Additionally, the 2013 reserve report is an upcoming catalyst – we believe NFX is an NAV story. On a $95 / $4 price deck, we estimate a 2013 P1 value of $23/shr.

Shares of Newfield have dropped 8% to $24.31 at 3:45 p.m., well below Exxon Mobil’s (XOM) 0.3% gain, Occidental Petroleum’s (OXY) 0.5% rise and Anadarko Petroleum’s (APC) 0.4% dip.

  • [By Travis Hoium]

What: Shares of Newfield Exploration (NYSE: NFX  ) jumped 10% today after the company released earnings.

So what: Domestic liquids production rose 9% and net production reached 11.7 million barrels of oil equivalent, at the high end of estimates. Earnings per share were $0.45, which was two cents ahead of estimates, ending a string of three straight earnings misses.

  • [By Victor Selva]

Competitors such as Sandridge Energy Inc. (SD), Penn Virginia Corp. (PVA), Newfield Exploration Co. (NFX) also have a negative ROE. An alternative could be Cabot Oil &Gas Corp. (COG), Range Resources Corp. (RRC), SM Energy Co. (SM), Pioneer Natural Resources Co. (PXD) or Whiting Petroleum Corp (WLL), Berry Petroleum Co. (BRY), but for investors searching for a high! er ratio,! Continental Resources Inc. (CLR) will be the best option.

Even the mere mention of tapering seems to send gold into a tailspin, as seen with SPDR Gold Shares, which has plunged 24% year to date and also suffered massive losses with its physical holdings. Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (NYSEMKT: GDX  ) has suffered a massive drop of 48% so far in 2013, making it one of the worst-performing ETFs this year.

5 of Last Week's Biggest Winners

What's better than momentum? Mo' momentum. Let's take a closer look at five of this past week's biggest scorchers.

Company

July 26

Weekly Gain

Himax Technologies (NASDAQ: HIMX  )

$7.30

41%

Facebook (NASDAQ: FB  )

$34.01

Baidu (NASDAQ: BIDU  )

$127.56

Cliffs Natural Resources (NYSE: CLF  )

$19.71

11%

Questcor Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: QCOR  )

$50.37

10%

Source: Barron's.

Let's start with Himax, which soared after Google (NASDAQ: GOOG  ) moved to take a small stake in the Taiwanese chipmaker's majority-owned display subsidiary. Himax had risen in the past on the high probability that the subsidiary's liquid crystal silicon chips would be a component in Google Glass as the high-tech specs go into mainstream production. This deal -- with Big G taking a 6.3% position that can escalate to 14.8% within the next year -- both cements the relationship and signals that the search giant is serious about wearable computing.

Facebook still hasn't clawed its way back to last year's IPO price, but it made some serious headway last week after some encouraging news on the monetization front. The world's leading social-networking website operator posted strong quarterly results, pointing out that 41% of its revenue now comes from mobile usage.

Investors have been unsure about Facebook's ability to cash in on the trend that's moving to consumption on smaller screens. However, the revenue's coming in. Facebook also claims that users aren't complaining, arguing that engagement rates are increasing.

China's leading search engine keeps moving higher. Baidu came through with yet another 15% gain this week after posting strong quarterly results.

The revived dot-com giant popped 15% higher last week after announcing a $1.9 billion deal to improve its prospects in mobile. This time around it was market-thumping results and guidance that translateed into accelerating revenue growth even at the low point of its range.

Cliffs Natural Resources didn't leave a lump of coal in shareholders' stockings this past week. Most of Cliffs' gain came on Friday, after the producer of iron ore and metallurgical coal delivered better-than-expected financial results. Revenue of $1.49 billion was just shy of the $1.58 billion it reported a year earlier, and profitability was shaved by more than half to $0.82 a share. However, analysts were holding out for net income of just $0.61 a share on $1.41 billion in revenue. Even warning that it will produce a million tons less in iron sales for the entire fiscal year than it had originally projected wasn't enough to rain on this parade. Cliffs Natural Resources has been beaten down so badly this year, that mixed news is good news.

Finally, we have Questcor moving higher. The biotech made its move during the final two trading days of the week, after announcing that it will begin the second phase of clinical trials for its Acthar gel for the treatment of patients with Lou Gehrig's disease. Questcor is initiating the patient screening process.

Top 10 Penny Companies To Watch For 2015

Top 10 Penny Companies To Watch For 2015: Cornerstone Progressive Return Fund(CFP)

Cornerstone Progressive Return Fund is a closed-ended equity fund of fund launched and managed by Cornerstone Advisors, Inc. The fund invests funds investing in the public equity markets of the United States. It invests in stocks of companies operating across diversified sectors. Cornerstone Progressive Return Fund was formed on April 26, 2007 and is domiciled in the United States.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

But you can see in several places the consequences of the stampede toward high yield. Here are just a few:

Closed-end funds Cornerstone Progressive (NYSEMKT: CFP  ) and Pimco High Income (NYSE: PHK  ) both make fixed payments back to fund shareholders on a monthly basis, and their distribution yields are truly extraordinary, at about 17% and 12%, respectively. Those dividends have enticed shareholders to pay $1.30 to $1.40 or more for each $1 of assets in the funds. Yet during most months, a substantial portion of those distribution payments has simply been a return of investor capital rather than true income from the funds' investments. A recent study discussed in The Wall Street Journal found that returns on a portfolio with a combined value and dividend-income strategy outperformed a strategy focused more exclusively on maximizing dividends by an average of 1.7 percentage points per year, a huge edge in long-run returns. In the dividend ETF arena, most funds tend to focus on maximizing yield. Although the popular Vanguard Dividend Appreciation (NYSEMKT: VIG  ) ETF bucks the trend by screening first for consistent dividend growth and only then looking at yield as a factor, many rival ETFs start with high-yielding stocks as their baseline and only then consider other desirable traits. Others focus solely on high-dividend niches of the market, such as iShares FTSE NAREIT Mortgage-Plus (NYSEMKT: REM  ) and its! concentration on high-yield mortgage REITs.

When dividend stocks get too popular, their prices get out of line with both their dividend income and the fundamentals of the businesses that underlie those stocks. In simpler terms, when dividend stocks become bad values, it's time to consider looking elsewhere for a margin of safety.

In august, the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) published the mid-year review for the agricultural sector. Their findings point to a slowdown for the industry, highlighting a 9.5% decline on exports through the first half of 2013. Also, late soybean planting in the USA is expected to compound the industry slowdown. So, what are the prospects for AGCO (AGCO), CNH Global (CNH), and Deere & Co. (DE) under such conditions?

  • [By Mike the PhD]

Historically the stock prices of Deere (DE) and other agricultural equipment firms and retailers like Case-New Holland (CNH), Titan Machinery (TITN), AGCO (AGCO), Tractor Supply (TSCO), Valmont (VAL), and Lindsay (LNN) have tended to closely track the price of corn. When corn prices go up, farmers tend to make more money, and they spend that money on new equipment from Deere and other firms. This relationship is especially strong for Deere and Corn, but it holds true for all of the stocks above to some extent. (Correlation coefficients between all of the stock prices above and corn are statistically significant to at least the 5% level, see my blog here for more details.)

christianz1969/Flickr Americans lately have been transferring their love of fast-casual restaurant food to stocks of companies in the segment. Late last month, "better burger" specialist The Habit Restaurants (HABT) launched an initial public offering that doubled in price within hours of hitting the market. Like a meal from one of The Habit's more traditional fast-food rivals, though, the feeling of satisfaction didn't last: The shares started to drop after the initial euphoria. But that isn't stopping other fast-casual operators from listing on the exchange. They're finding, though, what works in the kitchen isn't necessarily successful on the market. IPOh Yes IPOs of fast-casual chain operators are coming to the market faster than you can get a refill at a soda machine. This year alone has seen the market debut not only of The Habit, but also the Mediterranean-flavored Zoe's Kitchen (ZOES) and West Coast chicken griller El Pollo Loco Holdings (LOCO), among others. Like The Habit, the stocks of the latter two saw impressive first-day rises (although they didn't pop quite as high as those of the burger purveyor). Why the excitement? Some of it can certainly be ascribed to the IPO market itself, which has had a frothy ! year. As ! of this writing, 262 companies have gone public, a 25 percent rise over the same period of 2013. In terms of total proceeds from IPOs, 2014 is set to be the best year for at least the past decade. Building a Better Burrito But likely a bigger factor is that the fast-casual segment has one great model that investors are hoping the newcomers can at least partially replicate -- Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG). Since going public in 2006, the stock of the now-ubiquitous chain has gone through the roof. Its IPO was priced at $22 a share and doubled in its first day of trading. Since then, its shares have ballooned -- at the moment, they trade at nearly $660, for a hard-to-believe 2,900-plus-percent rise from the issue price. It's not t
