Why Diageo Is Up 34% During the Last 12 Months

LONDON -- Diageo  (LSE: DGE  ) (NYSE: DEO  ) has advanced 34% to 1,987 pence during the last 12 months, making the share one of the best performers in the FTSE 100.

The company, which holds a hefty lineup of renowned brands in the drinks industry, such as Guinness beer, Baileys Irish cream, and Jose Cuervo tequila, seems to have impressed investors with a series of strong statements.

During May last year, Diageo announced nine-month results that highlighted organic net sales had advanced 7%, with revenue within Africa, Asia, and Latin America up between 10% and 18%. Underlying sales in Europe, however, fell by 1%.

During August, Diageo's final-year results revealed sales had climbed 6% to almost 11 billion pounds and profits had gained 9% to 3.2 billion pounds, helped in part by the acquisition of Turkish firm Mey Içki. Free cash flow came in at 1.6 billion pounds, which supported an 8% dividend lift to 43.5 pence per share

Then in January, Diageo disclosed interim results that revealed operating profits had climbed 9% to surpass 2 billion pounds. Also up by 9% was the half-year dividend, sitting comfortably at 18.1 pence per share.

These results reflect the global strength of our strategic brands, our leadership in the U.S. spirits market and our increasing presence in the fastest growing markets of the world. Our expanding reach to emerging middle class consumers in faster growing markets was the key driver of our volume growth, while net sales growth was driven by our pricing strategy and premiumization, especially in the U.S. This drove gross margin expansion, which together with our continued focus on operating efficiencies, delivered operating margin improvement.

Wall Street stock futures trade in narrow range

Wall Street was on track Monday to start the trading week in a narrow range as stock futures were up slightly after the Dow Jones industrial average closed out last week at an all-time high.

Dow Jones industrial average index futures were up 0.1%, Standard & Poor's 500 index futures rose 0.1% and Nasdaq index futures were up 0.1%.

On Friday, the Dow gained 1.1% to close at a record 15,761.78. The S&P 500 index ended up 1.3% at 1,770.61, just shy of its record close of 1,771.95. . The Nasdaq advanced 1.6% to 3, 919.23.

FRIDAY: Dow closes at all-time high after strong jobs data

In energy trading Monday, benchmark crude for December delivery was down 16 cents to $94.44 in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 40 cents to close at $94.60 a barrel on Friday.

Asian stock markets eyed the strong U.S. economic growth data from last week as well as expectations that the Federal Reserve will start cutting back stimulus soon.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 1.4% Monday to 23,069.85 while China's Shanghai composite rose 0.2% to 2,109.47. Japan's Nikkei 225 advanced 1.3% to 14,269.84.

Stocks in Manila sank after a typhoon devastated the eastern Philippines, killing thousands of people.

Global investors were also waiting to see if China's communist leaders, who started a four-day meeting in Beijing on Saturday, would announce reform plans to bolster the world's No. 2 economy.

Mission Impossible? The Challenging Politics of Tax Reform

Everyone agrees that the tax code is a mess. So why is it so hard for Congress and the President to fix it?

There are lots of reasons. As observers of House Ways & Means Committee Chair Dave Camp's tax reform effort have seen, the idea has no natural constituency (except perhaps economists).

Some political headwinds apply to all big reforms. They are complicated and hard for real people to understand, the public mistrusts the motives of politicians who claim to be reformers, and voters doubt government's ability to get the changes right. Lawmakers today are in no mood for a grand bargain on anything. And then there is every pol's legislative Rule #1: Those who benefit from the reform will never thank you but the losers will squeal like stuck pigs.

Worse, tax reform has its own unique problems. By its very nature, real reform creates lots of winners and lots of losers. It's hard to make a political case for concepts such as fairness—an aim of reform that's often misunderstood. And there is no simple bumper-sticker goal. For instance, it is hard to make a credible case that reform will unambiguously create jobs and grow the economy (though supporters will certainly try).

Yet, tax reform has been possible in the past. It happened in 1986 when the unlikely team of Ronald Reagan, Dan Rostenkowski, Bob Packwood, Bill Bradley, and Jack Kemp overcame public indifference and skeptical lawmakers to rewrite the tax code.

March 31 Deadline Looms for Buying Individual Health Insurance

If you haven't bought health insurance yet, it's time to panic. You have less than a month to buy coverage or you may have to pay a penalty when you file your 2014 taxes next year.

The Affordable Care Act requires most everyone who can afford health insurance to be covered by April 1 or pay a penalty. That penalty could be a maximum of $285 for a family of four or up to 1 percent of the family income, whichever is greater.

If you want to buy a health plan through a broker or directly from a health insurance company, you have only until March 15 to do so. Buy a plan by then and your coverage will start April 1. If you buy health insurance anytime from March 16 to the 31 outside the government-run marketplaces, your coverage won't start until May 1.

Exchanges offer some breathing room
You have a little more breathing room if you buy your plan from the government-run marketplace in your state. If you buy a plan through the marketplace anytime between March 16 and 31, coverage won't start until May 1. But the Obama administration will let you slide. "Health and Human Services granted an extension for those enrolling in the marketplace but not for those enrolling outside the marketplace," says Carol Taylor, employee benefit advisor for D&S Agency in Roanoke, Va., a partner firm of United Benefit Advisors.

There is some urgency because really the only reason you would want to buy from the government-run exchange or marketplace is if you qualify for a subsidy, Taylor says. "If you buy outside the marketplace, you should be able to get more choices, and likely a larger network that is more suited to your needs," she says. "Health insurance companies don't have to offer the exact plans in the marketplace as they do out."

Open enrollment ending
If you are going to buy from the marketplace, you must do so during open enrollment and open enrollment which began Oct. 1 ends March 31. The next open enrollment is proposed to start Nov. 15 and end Jan. 15, 2015.

There's a reason for the current open enrollment period ending. Lawmakers felt they had to set a deadline or some people wouldn't enroll until they were sick and needed medical procedures. For the law to work, the government needs everyone to have coverage especially those who are healthy. Under the law, insurance companies can't refuse coverage based on your health status.

After March 31, the only way you will be able to buy a health insurance policy through the government-run marketplace for the rest of the year is if something happens and you lose your current coverage. That "something" is known as a qualifying life event, explains Scott Ogburn, senior consultant at ECM Ferguson Solutions in Greenville, S.C..

That's true for employer-sponsored plans as well -- you can only enroll during its open enrollment unless you have a qualifying event. About 70 percent of employers have open-enrollment during the last two months of the year for coverage that starts Jan. 1, notes Taylor.

Sign up for health insurance within 60 days of event
To be eligible to enroll in health care coverage outside open enrollment you typically must do so within 60 days of the qualifying event. Events that qualify include moving to a new state that offers different health plan options, certain changes in your income such as going from a full-time to a part-time job, and changes in your family status or size.

You would be eligible to enroll in a plan if you had coverage through your spouse or partner and you divorce or split. If you get married, you would be allowed to be added to your spouse's plan or your spouse added to your plan, Taylor says. If you have a child or adopt a child, the child can be added to your plan at that time as well.

You also would be eligible to enroll in the marketplace if you lose or quit your job and thus lose your employer-sponsored health-care coverage or if you have coverage through a spouse, partner or parent and he or she dies. If you decide to stop paying premiums or drop your health coverage for some other reason, it won't count. You won't be eligible for special enrollment.

If you have a disability or your income is low enough that you qualify for Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance Program in your state, you can enroll in these programs at any time. They have no open enrollment periods, says Ogburn.

Penalties for not having health insurance will rise in future years
Under health care reform, you can go 90 days a year without health insurance and not be penalized. But if you didn't sign up for health insurance by March 31, you will have used up your grace period for the year.

The penalties for failure to have health insurance increase significantly in future years. In 2015 it's the greater of 2 percent of income or $325 per person. In 2016 and later years, it's 2.5 percent of income or $695 per person, whichever is greater. After that time, the penalties are adjusted for inflation.

If you're uninsured for just part of the year, one-twelfth of the yearly penalty applies to each month that you are uninsured.

Taylor suggests using one of the online calculators including at health care.gov to see if you would qualify for a subsidy. The subsidy is based on a number of factors including annual income, family size and age.

If you qualify for a subsidy, you'd be better off buying from the marketplace and have until March 31 to decide. But if you don't qualify for a subsidy or for a small subsidy, you should look into plans available outside the marketplace, says Taylor. In that case, you need to get moving, she says, because time is running out.

Tax Breaks for Child-Care Expenses

We set aside $5,000 last year in a dependent-care flexible spending account through work to pay for my son's child-care expenses. However, we ended up with out-of-pocket expenses in excess of $5,000. Can we also take the child-care credit when we file our tax return?

No. Because you are paying for care for only one child younger than age 13, you can't take the child-care credit for the excess expenses. If, however, you were paying for two or more kids, you would be able to claim the credit on up to $1,000 of child-care expenses beyond the $5,000 covered by your flex plan.

The child-care credit applies to up to $3,000 of child-care expenses for one child or up to $6,000 for two or more. The most you can run through a flex plan, regardless of the number of children involved, is $5,000. So for a family with two or more qualifying children who max out on the flex plan, up to $1,000 of additional expenses could qualify for the credit. Because the credit ranges from 20% to 35% (depending on income), that could knock $200 to $350 off the family's tax bill.

The cost of a nanny, day care or preschool counts for the child-care credit or a dependent-care FSA, as does the cost of before-school and after-school care and summer day camp for kids younger than 13 if the expense is incurred so that you and your spouse can work. Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba sets U.S. IPO

HONG KONG (AP) — Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group said Sunday that it will go public on a U.S. stock exchange in a move analysts say might raise up to $15 billion in the year's biggest initial public offering.

The announcement confirming plans for a U.S. offering ended months of speculation over where the company would list its shares after talks for a Hong Kong stock sale fell apart last year.

Alibaba is one of the world's biggest Internet companies and says more than $150 billion worth of merchandise changes hands on its online platforms each year, more than Amazon and eBay combined.

The company began as a service to link Chinese suppliers with retailers abroad and has branched out into retail e-commerce. It is little known abroad but has launched two consumer-oriented services in the United States.

"Alibaba Group has decided to commence the process of an initial public offering in the United States," the company said in a statement. "This will make us a more global company and enhance the company's transparency, as well as allow the company to continue to pursue our long-term vision and ideals."

It gave no details of the timing or size of the initial public offering or on which exchange it would take place.

Analysts have estimated that an Alibaba IPO could raise up to $15 billion and value the company at more than $100 billion.

Hangzhou, China-based Alibaba had previously abandoned plans for an IPO in Hong Kong because the semiautonomous Chinese financial center's stock exchange refused to change its rules to accommodate the company's unusual management structure.

The company failed to persuade the Hong Kong exchange to grant it an exception from listing rules so that it could maintain a "partnership" structure that lets top executives, who own 10 percent of the company, retain control of the board.

The company hinted that the door has not completely shut on listing its stock in Hong Kong.

"Should circumstances permit in the future, w! e will be constructive toward extending our public status in the China capital market in order to share our growth with the people of China," the statement said.

Alibaba is one of a number of Chinese internet heavyweights planning to cash in with IPOs amid rapid growth. The announcement comes two days after Chinese internet company Sina Corp.'s Weibo microblog unit filed plans for a potential U.S. IPO. Weibo, China's equivalent of Twitter, indicates it plans to raise $500 million. Another Chinese online retailing giant, JD.com, filed in January for a U.S. stock listing.

Alibaba Group doesn't report its finances. But Yahoo, which owns a 24% stake in the company, said Alibaba's revenue for the quarter ending in September rose 51% from a year earlier to $1.8 billion.

That was down from 61% growth over a year earlier in the previous quarter and 71% in the first quarter of 2013.

Inside the Madness of the Stock Market

Originally printed in the Baltimore Sun on Oct. 17, 1989, after U.S. stocks dropped 6.9% on Oct. 13, it still circulates widely on Wall Street. ("The nation's most important financial institution" was the New York Stock Exchange.)

Remarkably, new research suggests that KAL might not just have been using his imagination to make fun of the way investors can turn on a dime for no reason whatsoever. He might also have put his finger on a psychological process that can make investors turn on a dime for a reason they're entirely unaware of.

Hearing or seeing a word that sounds like an action can prime you into taking that action, according to "From Bye to Buy: Homophones as a Phonological Route to Priming," to be published next month in the Journal of Consumer Research. Despite its infelicitous title, the paper may help explain, at least in small part, the mystery at the heart of KAL’s cartoon: How do contagions spread through financial markets?

The study, run by marketing professor Derick Davis at the University of Miami, exposed people to homophones (words that are pronounced the same but spelled differently) like "bye" and "buy."

For example, participants read a short blogpost about travel in Canada that ended either with "Bye bye!" or "So long!" Then they were asked how much they would pay for a name-your-own-price dinner for two at a local restaurant.

Those who had read the version of the blogpost that ended with "Bye bye!" were willing to pay up to 55.5% more than those who read the "So long" version. Merely seeing the word "bye" apparently made them more eager to buy. That was especially true for those who had to memorize a seven-digit number beforehand – the kind of distraction that many experiments have shown can reduce the mind's reliance on logical reasoning.

You should probably buy a few grains of salt to sprinkle onto these findings. Recently, critics have argued that related claims about "priming" or unconscious influences on behavior are fragile and difficult to replicate, while psychologist Uri Simonsohn of the University of Pennsylvania has shown that many similar studies are statistically underpowered.

Prof. Davis, who ran this study, concedes that the effects he found are small. However, he adds, the people in his experiments weren't just college students in a lab but were recruited online from a broader cross section of the population. And, he points out, people often fail to detect the incorrect use of homophones while proofreading, because the identical sound of the wrong word puts them in mind of the right word. (Think of all the times you didn't even notice that you typed "they're" for "their" or "there.")

If "people are distracted by noise, time pressure and other commotion," says Prof. Davis, their behavior may be more easily swayed by the homophone effect. When prompted by the sound "bye," he says, "on average across many people, a small change in 'buying' behavior may be possible." Prof. Davis, emphasizing that this is a speculation, adds that "a distracted investor primed with 'bye' might misremember reading that the stock was rated a 'buy.'"

KAL isn't surprised by the research. "The notion of human behavior being influenced by outside suggested stimuli certainly makes sense," he told me in a recent email. Almost 25 years after he drew his brilliant cartoon, he still gets requests for reprints every week, he says.

The contagious panic that KAL captured in his image was unsettling. On Oct. 13, 1989 – a Friday the 13th – the Dow closed down 190.58 points, or 6.91%. At the time, that was the second-worst point decline (after the October crash of 1987, when stocks fell 23% in a day) and the 12th-worst percentage drop on record. The crash was said to have been triggered by the collapse of takeover bids for airline stocks UAL and AMR, but nearly all the collapse came in the final hour of trading, well after the news that the takeover bids had fizzled.

The next trading day, The Wall Street Journal tried to explain the crash:

One takeover stock speculator says that with individual investors frightened away from the market, the remaining participants are mainly institutions, all with instant access to the same information, and the same ability to sell in an instant – that is, until all try to sell at once.

"If this is something that had happened over the last few weeks, nobody would have noticed," the speculator says. "But now it just happens in an hour. The information is very quick; it's often inaccurate; and reactions can be irrational."

In a guest essay published in the New York Times on Oct. 29, 1989, called "Fear of a Crash Caused the Crash," future Nobel Prize-winning economist Robert Shiller described a survey he had done of 101 market professionals the Monday and Tuesday after the tumble. Asked whether the drop was driven by "a change in the stock market fundamentals" or "psychology and emotion," only 19% cited fundamentals; 77% blamed psychology and emotion. Shiller and his colleague William Feltus also asked the professionals if they thought the latest drop could turn into a replay of the 1987 crash; 35% thought it could, while 41% thought other investors thought so.

So, when KAL poked fun at traders overreacting to what others say, he was right on the money.

To this day, says KAL, brokers buying copies of the cartoon "inevitably" tell him, "It was so funny because it was so true."

So if you walk into a brokerage or financial adviser's office and you hear "Bye Bye Love" and "American Pie" and "Bye Bye Blackbird" playing on the sound system, hang on to your wallet. You may be more easily swayed than you think.

5 Best New Stocks To Buy For 2014

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- You might recall, two Saturdays ago, an article I published featuring truly pathetic pictures from Sears Holdings (SHLD) stores went viral.

It's important to note that, despite the cat calls I received from Sears and a small fraction of the public, I have been more than fair in my coverage of the company. For goodness sake, in the very article with the "pathetic" pictures, I posted relatively attractive shots of Sears in Santa Monica.

While there's no question I consider Sears a national disgrace, generally, and, more specifically, for it's abhorrent conduct in Oakland, I'll only tell -- and illustrate -- the story as I see it.

With that mind, in the aftermath of the original dustup, a company called Rewardable contacted me and offered to visit a sample of retail outlets and systematically take photographs of Sears stores. In the interest of transparency I want to give you as much information about their process as I can so bear with me -- the images are on the way. But there's some interesting info and quantitative data to consider at the outset. First, here's how Rewardable asked me to describe the study and what it does: The data and photos were captured last weekend (Jan 11-12, 2014), as part of a larger retail study, by Rewardable, a cloud-based data collection start-up. The company utilizes mobile technology with a crowd sourced workforce to efficiently gather in-store (and other real world) data sets for a diverse array of companies -- ranging from leading hedge funds to retailers to government agencies. Rewardable had its "crowd sourced workforce" visit Sears as well as J. C. Penney (JCP) stores. I chose not to print the JCP pictures because, frankly, there was nothing there. Not messy. Just standard run of the mill, sterile and boring big box retail. This crowd sourced workforce also answered a survey based on their experience visiting the stores. As the results (narrated by Rewardable staff) show, JCP scored consistently higher than Sears. Rewardable had its people visit 120 JCP and 80 Sears stores across the country last weekend. The average age of the respondent was 40 with a 66%-34% female/male split. Remember, the respondents to the survey also took the pictures I will display and discuss later in this article. During the year ended December 31, 2011, the Company drilled two salt water disposal wells and commenced drilling the Wolfe#1-29H, the Company�� horizontal Mississippian well in Logan County, Oklahoma. In January 2012, the Company began drilling the Krittenbrink 2-36H, the Company�� second well in Logan County.

The Company�� subsidiary, Cimarrona LLC, owns a 9.4% interest in certain oil and gas assets in the Guaduas field, located in the Dindal and Rio Seco Blocks that consist of 21 wells, of which seven are producing, that covers 30,665-acres in the Middle Magdalena Valley in Colombia, as well as a pipeline with a capacity of approximately 30,000 barrels of oil per day. The Cimarrona property, but not the pipeline, is subject to an Ecopetrol Association Contract (the Association Contract) whereby the Company pays Ecopetrol S.A. (Ecopetrol) royalties of 20% of the oil produced.

The Company has acquired oil and gas leases in Logan County, Oklahoma targeting the Mississippian formation. The Mississippian formation is located on the Anadarko Shelf in northern Oklahoma and south-central Kansas. The top of this expansive carbonate hydrocarbon system is encountered between 4,000 and 6,000 feet and lies stratigraphically between the Pennsylvanian-aged Morrow Sand and the Devonian-aged Woodford Shale formations. The Mississippian formation reach 600 feet in gross thickness a! nd the targeted porosity zone is between 50 and 300 feet in thickness. The Company owns 100% of the working interest in certain producing oil and natural gas leases located in Osage County, Oklahoma (Hopper Property). The Property consists of 23 wells, 10 of which are producing wells, on 480 acres.

General Mills Offers Weak Q3 Guidance; Shares Fall (GIS)

Cereal maker General Mills, Inc. (GIS) on Friday surprised the markets with much weaker-than-expected fiscal third quarter earnings guidance, sending its shares lower in premarket trading.

The Minneapolis-based maker of Cheerios, Wheaties, and Lucky Charms forecast fiscal third quarter adjusted earnings of 61 to 62 cents per share, which would badly missed analysts’ outlook of 68 cents per share. The company will deliver its latest results on Wednesday, March 19.

The quarter, which ended on Feb. 23, was negatively affected by a 1% drop in sales volume. GIS noted that downturn was “consistent with recent food industry trends in developed markets.” Currency fluctuations also played a role in the weak performance, the company said.

Despite the lower-than-expected guidance, General Mills left its full-year outlook unchanged. The company’s shares fell $1.61, or -3.2%, in premarket trading Friday. Year-to-date, the stock is up around 2%.

In my continued search to save you time and money, today we tackle one of the most aggravating and inflated elements of travel: car rentals!

1. DON'T PICK-UP OR DROP-OF AT THE AIRPORT. If you can skip the car rental counter at the airport you'll save somewhere between 25% and 35% on the overall cost of your car rental. Airport kiosks usually have inflated drop-off and pick-up fees. It's often easy to find a car rental company within a mile or two of an airport for a much lower rental fee.

2. SKIP THE BIG BOYS. Sometimes going with a smaller company like Fox, Payless or Sixt Car Rental will save you more money over the "big boys" like Hertz, Budget or Enterprise. Also, in my opinion, skip every insurance policy they throw at you. The coverage through your current provider will usually suffice.

3. TACK ON DATES & USE A COUPON. This may sound bizarre but sometimes adding an extra day or a weekend to your actual travel dates will result in an overall lower rate, even if you return your car early. I've seen this technique also work well on hotels.

    Up first is CNO Financial Group (CNO), a mid-cap financial stock that's rocketed close to 60% higher since the calendar flipped over to January. Yup, it's been a great year for the market, but it's been a far better one for investors who own CNO. But that strong performance isn't showing any signs of slowing yet. In fact, CNO looks primed for even more upside in the fourth quarter.

    That's because CNO is currently forming a bullish pattern called an ascending triangle. The ascending triangle pattern is formed by a horizontal resistance level above shares -- in this case at $14.75 -- and uptrending support to the downside. Basically, as CNO bounces in between those two technical price levels, it's getting squeezed closer and closer to a breakout above that $14.75 resistance level. When that breakout happens, it's time to become a buyer.

    ACCO's price action isn't exactly textbook. After all, the pattern is coming in at the bottom of a downtrend, not after an uptrend. But ultimately, that doesn't change the trading implications of a move through that $7.50 level.

    Whenever you're looking at any technical price pattern, it's critical to think in terms of those buyers and sellers. Ascending triangles and other pattern names are a good quick way to explain what's going on in a stock, but they're not the reason it's tradable. Instead, it all comes down to supply and demand for shares.

    That $7.50 resistance level is a price where there has been an excess of supply of shares; in other words, it's a place where sellers have been more eager to step in and take gains than buyers have been to buy. That's what makes a breakout above it so significant. The move means that buyers are finally strong enough to absorb all of the excess supply above that price level.

    Don't be early on this trade.

The Company also sells several other personal property and casualty insurance products, select commercial property and casualty coverages, life insurance, annuities, voluntary accident and health insurance and funding agreements. Allstate primarily distributes its products through exclusive agencies, financial specialists, independent agencies, call centers and the Internet. It conducts its business primarily in the United States. Allstate has four business segments: Allstate Protection, Allstate Financial, Discontinued Lines and Coverages and Corporate and Other. ALLSTATE PROTECTION SEGMENT

The Allstate Protection segment also includes a separate organization called Emerging Businesses, which comprises Business Insurance (commercial products for small business owners), Consumer Household (specialty products including motorcycle, boat, renters and condominium insurance policies), A! llstate Dealer Services (insurance and non-insurance products sold primarily to auto dealers), Allstate Roadside Services (retail and wholesale roadside assistance products) and Ivantage (insurance agency). During the year ended December 31, 2011, total Allstate Protection premiums written were $25.98 billion. Its broad-based network of approximately 10,000 Allstate exclusive agencies in approximately 9,700 locations in the United States produced approximately 86% of the Allstate Protection segment's written premiums in 2011. It provides personal property and casualty insurance products through independent agencies in the United States. Additionally, Allstate distribution, through brokering arrangements, offers non-proprietary products to consumers when an Allstate product is not available.

ALLSTATE FINANCIAL SEGMENT

Allstate Financial segment provides life insurance, retirement and investment products, and voluntary accident and health insurance products. Its principal products are interest-sensitive, traditional and variable life insurance; fixed annuities, including deferred and immediate; and voluntary accident and health insurance. Its institutional products consist of funding agreements sold to unaffiliated trusts that use them to back medium-term notes issued to institutional and individual investors. Banking products and services were offered to! customer! s through the Allstate Bank through September 2011. In 2011, after receiving regulatory approval to voluntarily dissolve, Allstate Bank ceased operations.

The Company sells Allstate Financial products to individuals through multiple intermediary distribution channels, including Allstate exclusive agencies and exclusive financial specialists, independent agents, specialized structured settlement brokers and directly through call centers and the Internet. The Company sells products through independent agents affiliated with approximately 125 master brokerage agencies. Independent workplace enrolling agents and Allstate exclusive agencies also sell its voluntary accident and health insurance products primarily to employees of unaffiliated businesses. Its mortgage loan portfolio, which is primarily held in the Allstate Financial portfolio, totaled $7.14 billion as of December 31, 2011

    The problem MetLife sees from additional regulation is that higher capital requirements could hurt its returns and therefore force customers to pay more for its products.     There's nothing all that unusual in the pension problems facing Girl Scouts of the USA. Plenty of private companies and public-sector employers are dealing with the same issues and have had to take similar steps to shore up their pension finances. Like the GSUSA, IBM (NYSE: IBM  ) and Verizon (NYSE: VZ  ) froze their pension plans several years ago, as both companies decided that reducing the unpredictability of pension benefits made the most sense for them in managing their risk.
